Welcome to the cheerful and crazy world of Mr Doodle! Sam Cox (born 1993), also known as Mr Doodle, is a British street artist and illustrator from Kent, England, specializing in amazing, large-scale, joyful doodle creations. With his unique style, he draws on anything – from walls to furniture and entire rooms – creating pieces full of endless characters, patterns, and intricate details. Every artwork by Mr Doodle is a celebration of creativity, showcasing his special ability to turn ordinary objects into something that brings joy and inspiration to viewers.
Doodling as Meditation: The Connection Between Art and Joy
“It’s a process of release or meditation, a liquid, therapeutic process, uncalculated and without hesitation. I aim to spread a sense of wonder, chaos, and hope while seeking a greater understanding of our place in the universe,” says Mr Doodle. “I’ve always wanted to create a universal doodle language that can connect with and attract people from all over the world.”
After studying illustration at the University of the West of England in Bristol, Mr Doodle’s unique art style took shape. His monochrome doodles, often referred to as "spaghetti graffiti," became his signature. Initially, he sold pieces for as little as £1, but his popularity skyrocketed as he gained attention on social media, attracting around 3 million Instagram followers and gaining international recognition. Reportedly, his works have sold for up to £1 million, and in 2020, he was ranked 5th in auction sales worldwide for artists under 40.
Covering the World in Doodles – Boundless Creativity
Mr Doodle’s work style is defined by complex, imaginative patterns created with black markers. His pieces cover walls, furniture, and even entire rooms, captivating audiences with their playful, dreamlike nature. In 2022, Mr Doodle embarked on an ambitious journey to cover his entire six-room house in Tenterden with his doodles! The project involved 900 liters of paint, hundreds of spray cans, and thousands of markers. This massive project gained extensive social media coverage and led to a documentary film about his life and work, titled *The Problem with Mr Doodle*.
A Generational Inspiration – DoodleLand and Playful Characters
Mr Doodle began covering the surfaces around him with doodles from a young age. He started with his parents’ furniture and eventually covered his entire bedroom before realizing that his home wasn’t a big enough canvas. From there, he expanded to creating on walls in local fast-food restaurants and schools. Over his career, Mr Doodle created a whole new visual phenomenon: DoodleLand, a world where he shares his vision, creating dense clusters of characters, objects, and patterns that continually evolve and multiply.
Mr Doodle’s art gained recognition in 2015, and his popularity has grown rapidly ever since. As a leading millennial artist, his work has sparked discussions on what is considered "fine art" today, and he continues to captivate the online art community with a massive social media following.
