If there is one place that explains Vienna’s street art scene better than any other site, it is the Danube Canal, the Donaukanal. Anyone arriving here for the first time might think it is simply another pleasant urban promenade, but within just a few minutes, it becomes clear that this is a completely different kind of space.
Unlike murals, which sometimes remain for years, graffiti exists at a completely different pace. It appears at night, disappears within days, is replaced by another writer, and returns again and again to the same places.
During my visit to Vienna, I encountered works by many artists. Some are well known names in the world of street art, while others are known mainly in Austria and Central Europe.
In Vienna, street art is spread across the entire city. There is no single street where all the works can be found, and no one neighbourhood that can be defined as the city’s “street art centre.”
Unlike paintings in museums, Vienna’s murals are not permanent. Buildings are renovated, walls are repainted, and sometimes even high quality works disappear completely.
