Where to Find Street Art in Vienna: A Complete Neighbourhood-by-Neighbourhood Guide
Anyone looking for street art in Vienna for the first time may find it confusing. Unlike cities such as Berlin, London, or Paris, where there are clearly defined areas associated with the scene, in Vienna it is spread across the entire city. There is no single street where all the works can be found, and no one neighbourhood that can be described as the “centre of street art”. This distribution makes the search more interesting, but it also requires a little advance planning.
During my visit, I explored many different districts, some highly touristy and others that barely appear in travel guides. In each one, I found a different character, a different pace, and a different type of street art. In some areas, graffiti is the main feature; others are characterised by large murals; and there are also neighbourhoods where the art blends into its surroundings almost without disturbing the sense of peace and order so closely associated with Vienna.

Donaukanal
If there is one place to begin exploring Vienna’s street art, it is the Danube Canal. It is not a neighbourhood in the traditional sense, but rather a long strip that crosses the city. In terms of the local scene, however, it is its beating heart. For years, the concrete walls, spaces beneath the bridges, and areas between the cycle paths have featured an uninterrupted sequence of graffiti, murals, stickers, stencils, and artistic interventions of every kind.
It is also the most dynamic location in the city. Almost every visit looks different because the walls are constantly changing. New works appear, others disappear, and the result feels like a living gallery that never stops renewing itself. Click here to read the full post.

Neubau
Neubau is one of Vienna’s most creative districts. Independent cafés, design shops, small galleries, and a youthful atmosphere create a natural setting for street art as well. You will not usually find enormous murals here. The neighbourhood’s charm lies in the smaller details: illustrations, stencils, stickers, typographic works, and subtle interventions in the urban space.
This is a neighbourhood worth exploring slowly while looking in every direction. For photographers, Neubau is one of the most enjoyable districts for wandering without a fixed destination.
Gürtel
The Gürtel encircles a large part of the city and is one of Vienna’s main transport routes. Beneath the elevated railway and along the surrounding buildings, a particularly active graffiti scene has developed over the years.
The area is less aesthetically polished than the city centre, but that is precisely part of its charm. Alongside larger works, you can find countless layers of graffiti, inscriptions, and paintings created over the years. Anyone primarily interested in graffiti culture will find plenty to explore here.
Favoriten
The Favoriten district is one of the areas where the influence of the Calle Libre Festival is particularly noticeable. Over the years, several large murals have been added here and have become an integral part of the urban landscape.
This is a highly diverse residential district, and the art blends into the everyday lives of its residents. Unlike in the city centre, the murals here are not a tourist attraction, but part of the environment in which people live. A visit to the area offers an opportunity to see how street art can transform an entire street without changing its character.
Ottakring
Ottakring is a district that has been undergoing a process of urban renewal in recent years, and such changes are often accompanied by a flourishing street art scene.
Here, you can find a combination of new murals alongside older graffiti, creating the feeling of a place in a constant state of change. This is not an area you visit for one specific work, but rather a place to wander around and discover.
Spittelau
Most visitors come to Spittelau because of the waste incineration plant designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, but the surrounding area offers much more. The area combines industrial buildings, transport infrastructure, and several interesting works of street art, creating a fascinating contrast between Hundertwasser’s colourful architecture and the contemporary expression on the walls. It is one of the places where you can see how street art blends into a space that is not inherently tourist oriented.
How Should You Plan Your Visit?
The most common mistake is trying to cover all the areas in a single day. The distances are relatively large, and travelling between them takes time. It is better to choose one or two areas each day, spend a few hours exploring them, and combine them with a relaxed walk.
If this is your first time in Vienna, I would begin with the Donaukanal and combine it with Neubau or the city centre. On another day, you can continue to Favoriten, Ottakring, or Spittelau, depending on the works that interest you most.
Ultimately, each of these areas adds a different piece to the mosaic of street art in Vienna. The Donaukanal presents the lively and constantly changing scene, Neubau reflects everyday creativity, the Gürtel represents graffiti culture, Favoriten shows the influence of Calle Libre, and Spittelau reveals the connection between architecture, industry, and art. Only when all these areas are brought together does the true character of Vienna’s street art begin to emerge.
