In April 1984, he began painting on the Berlin Wall and is considered the first artist to have done so. Noir\u2019s goal was to carry out a truly revolutionary act: to paint on the Berlin Wall, to transform it, to make it ridiculous, and to contribute to its eventual fall in 1989. He covered the wall &#8211; over 3 meters high &#8211; with bright, vibrant colors, not to decorate it, but to demystify and diminish the sense of threat and intimidation it embodied. Noir had to paint as quickly as possible, using a \u201crecipe\u201d of just two figures and three colors &#8211; a celebration of \u201ceternal youth.\u201d Despite their bright colors and playful appearance, the paintings evoked a sense of melancholy: as Noir puts it, \u201cI was simply reacting to the sadness of the Wall.\u201d<\/p><p>Since the 1980s, Noir\u2019s actions and his distinctive visual language have become internationally recognized and immortalized in popular culture &#8211; appearing in Wim Wenders\u2019 1987 film <em>Wings of Desire<\/em> and on the cover of U2\u2019s album <em>Achtung Baby<\/em>.<\/p><p>Noir\u2019s work focuses on line and aims to reduce forms to their most basic components. This simplicity reflected the need to paint quickly in a dangerous outdoor setting, under real threat to his personal safety.
