Ben Wilson, born in 1963, is often referred to as an “outsider artist.” Growing up in a creative environment and studying at an art school, Wilson developed a distaste for industrial waste, cars, and litter, which eventually evolved into a unique form of art. He creates tiny artworks on discarded chewing gum stuck to sidewalks. Initially, his work attracted unwanted attention from authorities, but since he doesn\u2019t deface private property – only painting on refuse – he found a loophole that allowed him to continue his craft.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Transforming Litter into Art
<\/strong>Since 2004, Ben Wilson has been transforming thousands of discarded chewing gum stains on the streets of London into miniature works of art. For over two decades, he has painted whimsical miniatures on the countless gum spots that have been crushed into the city’s pavements. Each of Wilson’s pieces is unique; many are dedicated to passersby who ask him to commemorate friendships, honor lost loves, or simply state, “I live here.”<\/p>

Wilson’s technique begins by softening the discarded gum using a blowtorch, then spraying the area with varnish before applying three layers of acrylic enamel. His designs often reflect requests from people who stop to chat with him. He uses tiny brushes and dries his work quickly with a lighter flame while working, sealing it with additional varnish. Each painting takes several hours to complete and can last for many years.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Inspiration and Challenges
<\/strong>When asked about his inspiration, Wilson states, “People. My work is created from the environment, giving it a social context. For instance, people ask for dedications. The creation evolves from the surroundings rather than being imposed upon them. It\u2019s always a process of exploration. I love to explore the environment through miniatures – a parallel world that only exists if you know where to look.”<\/p>

The weather can be extreme, as Wilson works in all conditions – cold or wet. Another challenge comes from the London police; there have been instances where officers tried to confiscate his brushes. In one incident, Wilson faced a police officer who attempted to take his brush, but he continued painting despite the interruptions. Fortunately, when a senior officer arrived, they already recognized him, and the situation was resolved.<\/p>

If you\u2019re lucky, you might catch Wilson in action. He has regular spots and favorite corners like Shoreditch, Hackney, and of course, the Millennium Bridge, where he has created a series of hundreds of chewing gum artworks. Now in his 60s, Wilson is tall and has an irresistible smile. When he creates in the street, he wears a work jumpsuit covered in paint stains and lays on a thick mat he always carries in his backpack, along with his toolkit.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Art and Public Space
<\/strong>One of the themes that interests Ben Wilson is the issue of painting in public space and the fear that his creations might be perceived as vandalism. Over the years, he has successfully proven in court that he does not paint on public property or commercial real estate. Chewing gum, he argues, is the ultimate consumer product: it has no nutritional value, is nearly indestructible, and attempting to remove it is costly and labor-intensive. “There\u2019s a symbolism in turning something that was discarded thoughtlessly into something meaningful.”<\/p>

Despite facing unjust arrests, Wilson\u2019s most traumatic experience occurred in 2010 while working on the Millennium Bridge. He was painting for some excited schoolchildren when the police arrived and attempted to arrest him for property damage. “It was awful; they dragged me along the bridge as if I had stolen something or committed a crime, throwing me into a holding cell.” He eventually won the case in London\u2019s court, thanks to numerous letters of support that poured in from all directions.<\/p>

Currently, his handmade work is threatened by deep cleaning efforts on the bridge\u2019s deck. While no one wants to interfere with the maintenance of the bridges, the thorough cleaning could erase Ben\u2019s chewing gum art, created over two decades of effort. In 2024, a petition was established to preserve a small selection of Ben Wilson\u2019s artworks.<\/p>
